The Forest Philosopher: Finding Wellness & Wisdom in the Woods
September 1-3, 2023
Join leading Shinrin Yoku guide and award-winning Landscape Architect, David Motzenbecker of Motz Studios in Minneapolis, for an intentional weekend of wellness and wisdom in the woods.
We will explore the increasingly popular Japanese art of Forest Bathing (Shinrin Yoku), translated as ‘taking in the forest air with all of your senses’. Forest bathing is an experiential wellness activity that emerged from Japan in the early 1980’s and is still nascent here in the United States. It has been so well received and proven so beneficial that Japan has close to seventy national parks just for this activity.
Forest bathing reduces blood pressure, stress hormones, and anxiety. It boosts immunity, altruism, and creativity. To experience these benefits, you will journey into the forest on two separate occasions, where you’ll be guided through unique invitations that prompt you to see your surroundings anew. The walks are slow, immersive, and very relaxing.
We will intersperse our wanderings with discussions on topics such as: the intercultural threads of nature connection, wellness, and spirituality; salutogenics, resilience, and meaning; Stoic philosophy; and a few other related topics.
There will also be time for quiet journaling & reflection; and convivial camaraderie with saunas, bonfires & conversation.
