In the Footsteps of St. Francis:

Experience Franciscan Values in the Heart of Italy

Join us for a Pilgrimage to Italy to Celebrate the Christine Center’s 45th Anniversary
September 23-October 3, 2025

Step into the heart of Franciscan values, grounded in a spiritual journey to Assisi and the beautiful Umbrian countryside. This journey holds special meaning as we mark 45 years of contemplative practice at the Christine Center, founded and sustained on the values of St. Francis.

We warmly invite you to explore sacred sites, connect with the rich Franciscan tradition, and celebrate with us on a pilgrimage into the lives of Saint Francis and his followers while immersing ourselves in the Italian culture.

St. Francis lived values not as abstract ideals but as a way of being. His life was a testament to the power of love, humility, and devotion. His example continues to call people into a deeper, more authentic relationship with God, self, others, and the natural world.

During this 11-day experience, we will stay at the peaceful Villa Pieve, a retreat center near the medieval town of Corciano. Each site we visit carries the legacy of his life and teachings, offering opportunities for spiritual growth and heartfelt connection to the values inspired by his life and teachings. The inclusive spirit of the Christine Center will walk with us, welcoming all practices and traditions.

Journey with us on this sacred path and celebrate our shared heritage. Together, we will honor the stories that shaped St. Francis’ life, discover the gentle power of Franciscan spirituality, and return home with a deeper experience of compassion and peace, rooted in Franciscan values and the sustaining movement he began and which continues today.

With space for 20 participants, this is an intimate journey offering a unique opportunity
to walk in the spirit of St. Francis with a like-hearted community

Each Morning...

We will begin with prayer, reflection, and meditation, guided by the wisdom of St. Francis.

Each Day...

We will experince the journey of St. Francis through the insightful guidance of our amazing host, Rossella Vasta. As we walk in his footsteps, we will explore the landscapes, sacred sites, and stories that shaped his extraordinary path of faith, simplicity, and love.

Each Evening...

We will gather for reflection with Jonathan, Kris, and Valerie, creating space to deepen our connection to the values we hold—contemplation, compassion, hospitality, simplicity, care for the earth, and transformation. Through shared insights, personal reflection, and meaningful conversation, St. Francis’ spirit will inspire our journey, opening our hearts to his timeless wisdom.

The Vasta family and the keepers of Villa Pieve are ready to welcome you!

Villa Pieve

Our home for 9 nights in Umbria, the green heart of Italy. Villa Pieve is located on 8 acres of land next to an historical, medieval castle in the foothills of one of Italy’s most beautiful towns, Corciano. On our final evening, we will come together in community for a celebratory Gala dinner, joined by invited guests, to honor the Christine Center’s 45th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of Villa Pieve International School.

Highlights of Our Journey

Corciano

Discover the charm of this historic medieval town, where St. Francis passed through on his journeys between Assisi and Perugia. Enjoy a special welcome and souvenir from the Minister of Corciano, visit the Antiquarium museum, and tour artist Rossella Vasta’s Studio to see and hear about her art and the Table of Silence, a reflection on peace and unity that resonates with Franciscan values.

Perugia

Perugia played a significant role in Francis’ early life. After being captured in battle between Assisi and Perugia in 1202, he spent a year in captivity, an experience that shaped his journey toward spiritual transformation. Visit landmarks such as Rocca Paolina, Fontana Maggiore, the Etruscan Arch, and the Roman Aqueduct while hearing stories of Francis’ time in the city. Enjoy a winery tour and sampling of local delicacies at L’Azienda Agraria Carini, and take part in a special cooking demonstration of mostaccioli, the traditional honey-almond cookies associated with St. Francis.

Rivotorto and Santa Maria degli Angeli

Rivotorto was one of the first places where St. Francis and his early followers lived in extreme poverty, dedicating themselves to prayer and service, particularly caring for lepers. Visit the Sanctuary of Rivotorto, a site deeply connected to his ministry of compassion. Enjoy a typical Umbrian meal before touring the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, home of the beloved Porziuncola chapel, where Francis received his divine calling and where he spent his final days. Explore a Franciscan bookstore and see the church where St. Clare sought refuge on Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of her own radical journey in the footsteps of Francis.

Cortona

Visit the Franciscan Hermitage Le Celle, a place of deep solitude where St. Francis wrote his Testament, reflecting on his life’s mission. Here, he and his followers retreated in prayer, seeking communion with God in nature. Also visit the Basilica of St. Margaret of Cortona, dedicated to a saint whose life of repentance and service closely echoes Francis’ call to conversion and humility.

San Damiano

This small church holds a profound place in Francis’ journey. It was here that, while praying before the crucifix, he heard the voice of Christ saying, “Francis, rebuild my church, which is falling into ruin.” Initially interpreting this literally, he began restoring the structure before realizing his true mission: to renew the Church through a life of simplicity and love. Visit this sacred space, attend Vespers, and experience a special concert inspired by the Canticle of the Creatures, Francis’ great hymn of praise for creation.

Lake Trasimeno and Isola Maggiore

Ferry to this picturesque island where St. Francis spent Lent in complete solitude, mirroring Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness. Follow in his footsteps with time for reflection in the serene natural surroundings, experiencing the peacefulness that Francis sought in his moments of retreat and prayer.

Greccio

Explore the site of the first Nativity scene, created by St. Francis in 1223 to bring the mystery of Christ’s birth to life. In a humble cave, he gathered villagers and animals to re-enact the story, emphasizing the simplicity and wonder of the Incarnation. Reflect on the origins of this beloved tradition, which continues to inspire hearts around the world.

Assisi

Experience the heart of St. Francis’ life and legacy. Visit the Cathedral of San Rufino, where he and St. Clare were baptized, the Basilica of St. Clare, where the San Damiano crucifix is enshrined, and the grand Basilica of St. Francis, which houses his tomb. Walk through the sacred spaces that shaped his journey and visit the Santuario della Spoliazione, where the young millennial saint Carlo Acutis is interred, connecting past and present through lives of holiness and devotion.

Immerse yourself in the peace and inspiration of Franciscan heritage.
Together, we’ll honor the legacy of the Christine Center and
deepen our shared commitment to spiritual growth and connection.

Your Companions for the Journey

Dr. Kris Hipp, Jonathan Elmergreen, and Valerie Haberman
will companion us through a personal immersion into Franciscan values & Italian Culture.

Kris Hipp

Kris, a lifelong Midwesterner, earned a BSE and MSE in Special Education from UW-Whitewater and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from UW-Madison. She spent 26 years in the Janesville School District, teaching and leading Special Education and Staff Development efforts while adjunct teaching at UW-Whitewater. She later taught Educational Leadership at Ball State University and retired (“refocused”) in 2013 as Professor Emerita from Cardinal Stritch University’s Doctoral Leadership Studies program.

For 40 years, she has been a consultant and facilitator, leading organizational change and collaborating, presenting, and publishing nationally and internationally on Professional Learning Communities, Collective Efficacy, Leadership Capacity, and Effective Leadership in High-Needs Schools.

While at “Stritch” Kris became passionate about leading and serving to reflect the Franciscan values. In 2003 she participated in a life-changing Franciscan Pilgrimage Program to Assisi and Rome, and soon after, established a partnership with Rossella Vasta, Director of Pieve International School in Umbria. She began teaching, researching, and coordinating Leadership, Learning and Service retreats and Italian Cultural Immersion tours. She has studied Italian to better co-host groups, interact with the people in this beautiful country, and deepen her understanding of the culture.

Kris serves on the Executive Council at the Mindfulness Community of Milwaukee and the Board of Directors for the Christine Center, which she calls her “Cardinal Stritch, Assisi, and Spiritual Home.” A dedicated supporter of its Mission, Vision, Values, and inclusivity, she cherishes the sign at its entrance: “The stillness calls you.” Kris is excited about co-hosting this 45th Anniversary Franciscan Experience at Villa Pieve, her 24th visit and 15th co-host for groups! She promises a memorable experience that has potential to be transforming as it continues to be for her.

Jonathan Elmergreen

Jonathan grew up in the Wausau, WI area and on the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians Reservation. The gentle woods of the Christine Center feel like home.

Jonathan has a rich history of leading nonprofits and working with universities, foundations, and boards. He is grateful the mystery of life has led him to be part of the Christine Center community.

Before the Christine Center, Jonathan served as Executive Director of the Higher Education Video Game Alliance (HEVGA), an international association for professors and college students studying interactive media. During his time with HEVGA, the organization became a global leader through strategic partnerships with foundations, nonprofits, governing bodies, and a strong network of members.

Jonathan received a BS in Sociology from UW–Madison and an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on nonprofit management, systems, and leadership.

His spiritual background is rooted in Zen Buddhism, the Mohican Native American tradition, and Christianity.

His orientation towards community is deeply influenced by Buddhist monastic practice, especially the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, who emphasizes that collective peace is possible by returning to the present moment through mindfulness.

Jonathan’s leadership style begins with a gentle smile. Embodying deep spiritual practice in his daily life is the greatest gift he can offer as a leader.

When not living at the Christine Center, he lives in Milwaukee with his partner, Spencer, and their two adorable cats.

Jonathan loves to explore the grounds of the Christine Center, whether that is walking on the trails, pondering on a bench, or sitting (and singing!) by the fire. He would love it if you joined him.
