….“When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of distress and anxiety. If I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without any pain from this, I understand that what I want also wants me….”
Rumi
In this retreat we will be exploring the essential quality of the White Latifa, True Will which brings a presence in our soul of true support; an unwavering determination and solid steadfastness for opening to our experience as it is. Our inner journey needs this quality to keep going, to persevere, to continue, rather than getting discouraged or losing heart. We usually think of support as doing something, but real support has nothing to do with that. It is an inner sense of solidity, of a solid ground within you that feels like support for being truly yourself. We may experience the essential support of Will as delicate and subtle, like soft clouds, or maybe grounded, solid, and resilient, like a mountain. It is all in service of our inner journey.
Retreat Teaching
This retreat is part of a series of teachings we are presenting on the qualities of our being known as the Lataif. These are subtle qualities that include aspects such as strength, will and support, peace, courage, joy, and compassion. The quality of Will is very different from the quality of Strength. While Strength Essence is a fiery presence of excitement and energy, and needed to initiate our inner journey, the Will is more down to earth, more steady and solid. Thus it can bring more depth and subtlety to your inquiry. Will indicates perseverance: You find yourself staying with elements in your experience longer, and you are more patient. As a result, you can see more depth, more discrimination, more subtlety, and more profundity in whatever you are exploring.
Activating these inner qualities not only enriches our lives but helps us build the capacity for spiritual deepening. In that regard, the Lataif can be thought of as tools for our unfoldment; qualities that help us understand ourselves at our deepest nature. We will continue the exploration of these qualities throughout the next several retreat weekends.
Retreat Structure
This is an ongoing retreat group in the initial stages of the Diamond Approach work called Midwest Group 4. We are meeting 4 weekends a year, with a mix of in-person and online retreats. As the group gets established, additional sessions will be added which will extend the retreat.
Weekend retreats will be composed of meditation, breath and movement practices, lectures, and self-reflection, exercises geared toward connecting with our True Nature and facilitating the unfoldment of our souls.
Schedule: Friday evening thru Sunday at noon.
-
- Friday 7-9:30PM,
- Saturday 9:00AM-8:30P
- Sunday 9:00AM-12:00PM.
At 6 PM on Friday there is an introduction to the retreat for new people and anyone interested in reviewing the retreat format and practices at 6 pm on Friday.
This February retreat is being taught on-line, however, the option to attend in-person has become available. Most hermitage rooms are open and the main meeting hall is reserved for viewing the teachings and to practice together. There will be one teacher on-site and two on-line. There will also be one in-person small group on Saturday evening.
For those interested in the Diamond Approach, this is a great opportunity to check out a Diamond Approach retreat with an open and ongoing group.
If you have any questions please contact the teachers at DiamondApproachMidwest@gmail.com.
“If there’s anyone else you know who’s under 40 and on the fence about checking out the DA, here’s the link to the youth scholarship fund: https://dayouthfund.org/. It can be for the first retreat, either online or residential in-person and can also cover child care costs!”
This retreat is a vital part of our exploration into the five Lataif; a group of essential aspects that not only enrich our lives but help us build the capacity for spiritual deepening in all aspects of our development.

Kathleen Graham, RN, MS, she/her
Diamond Approach Teacher
I have been a student of the Diamond Approach since 1996, and after many years of deeper study in the DA seminary program, was ordained as a teacher of the Diamond Approach in 2016. Since then I have been working with individual students and I am part of the teaching team for Midwest DA group 4. Prior to my work as a Diamond Approach teacher I enjoyed a long career as an advanced practice oncology nurse and hospice nurse which informed me about the nature of presence, although I didn’t know what to call it then. I learned as I was with those facing their suffering and mortality what an open heart really means. I find presence is a kind of nourishment for ourselves and others and is what welcomes just what is there. From the earliest days of attending Diamond Approach retreats I have been so impacted by the open hearted sensitivity of the teachers to invite me to be right where I am, with all places that felt so untouchable. This is an ongoing and every revealing journey for me. As a teacher, I bring this love and passion, and kind holding for ever unfolding and deepening truth for the students I work with. I enjoy life itself very much and I resonate completely with spending time in nature, hiking, swimming, traveling especially in the more remote parts of the world, and spending time with my partner and family of the heart.
